Steven Matthews (Newcastle University): Biographical Details

Stephen Matthews is a Research Associate at Newcastle University, UK. His research area focuses on Data Science specifically for livestock, such as applications of innovative approaches to health and welfare and production. This includes sensor deployments, 3D vision processing, computational modelling and analysis of behaviour, change detection methods and unsupervised learning, such as association rules and subspace/projected clustering.

Stephen currently works on a BBSRC and Innovate UK funded project that seeks to detect the early warning signs of problems in pigs. The aim is to automatically monitor pig behaviours with sensors and generate warnings when there are health and welfare problems to help farmers manage large numbers of animals. Stephen also works on an EPSRC Impact Acceleration Account award that addresses security concerns of data generated from Internet of Things technologies on farms by using machine learning methods.

Stephen holds a PhD (2012) in Computer Science from De Montfort University, UK, that contributed fuzzy association rule mining methods to discover rules with temporal properties. Stephen was previously a Research Assistant at the University of Bristol, UK.
